„Gehen wir zum Calafati?”

In Wien: traf man mich ab 1820 im Wiener Prater. 

Zur Person: Ich war Taschenspieler, Illusionist, Ringelspiel- und Restaurantbesitzer. Ich gelte als Begründer der 

Zauberbuden und -theater im Prater. 

Wussten Sie: Mein Ringelspiel hieß „Zum schwarzen Rössl“, doch im Volksmund etablierte sich die Bezeichung „Zum Großen Chineser“. Den Mittelpunkt des Ringelspieles bildete ab 1854 eine 9 Meter hohe idealtypische Chinesenfigur.

In Vienna: you met me at the Vienna Prater (amusement park) from 1820.

About me: I was a sleight of hand, an illusionist, a merry-go-round and restaurant owner. I am considered the founder of magic booths  and theatre in the Prater.

Fun Fact: My merry-go-round was called “The Black Steed”, but in common parlance the term “The huge Chinese” became popular. From 1854 the center of the merry-go-around was a 9 meter high, stereotypical Chinese figure.
